Dr. David S. Pascal

Dr. David Pascal grew up in Los Angeles, where he was the City Cross Country Champion, ran the fastest mile at the California State Track & Field Championships, and was the Athlete of the Year. He ran Cross Country and Track for UCLA, where he set the NCAA Intramural National Record for 800 Meters, and was a member of the NCAA National Championship Track & Field Dual Meet Team.

After UCLA David Pascal was sponsored by NIKE while competing for the Santa Monica Track Club (#1 Team in the World), and for the United States on the World Circuit (Zurich, Berlin, Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo). In 1983 he ran the 17th-fastest time in the world for 1000 meters.

He has run the metric equivalent to a 3:57 mile, and was the 1500 Meter Champion at the 1983 World Games in Helsinki, Finland.

Dr. Pascal graduated from UCLA in 1984 and from Palmer College of Chiropractic-West in 1988, with a B.A. in psychology and a Doctorate in Chiropractic.

He has taught continuing education courses for Los Angeles Chiropractic College on injury rehabilitation. He has been the subject of a cover story in Bicycling Magazine. He helped design a new drug testing system for German Olympic athletes that were training in the United States. And in 1989 he developed a unique technique for the treatment of low back disc injuries called “Power Flexing.” It is being taught in the chiropractic schools and has saved thousands of people from low back surgery.

As a chiropractor, Dr. Pascal has been treating high school, college, and world-class athletes for over 17 years. He has been the chiropractor at countless athletic events. This summer he had 14 of his patients qualify for the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials. Five went on to make the U.S. Olympic Team and a sixth qualified for the Para-Olympics. He also had eight foreign runners make the Olympic teams of their respective countries.

The Americans he trained went on to win a total of six medals: 3 Gold, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze. Three weeks ago his Para-Olympian set a new world record in the 200-meter dash.

In the 2004 Athens Olympics, after winning the 100 Meter Gold medal, Justin Gatlin was asked (by Pat O'Brien on NBC), what he thought was the number one reason why he won. Justin said, "I won because I was able to stay injury free."

Justin's secret to staying injury free can be seen on a recent special on the Discovery Channel's Fit TV. Dr. Pascal appears with Justin on “Peak Performance: Secrets of Superstar Fitness: World-Class Athletes. The one-hour special for FitTV reveals the latest, state-of-the-art training and fitness techniques used by five of America's top athletes as they were training for the 2004 summer games. Dr. Pascal is the only doctor on the show.

Here is a partial transcript: “Being a full-time competitor means an increased risk of injury. At this level of competition, Olympic sprinter Justin Gatlin has to make sure to take care of his entire body, and that includes the recovery of it. Sports medicine plays a key role in minimizing any damage, so Justin visits chiropractor Dr. David Pascal on a regular basis.”
